General introduction and overview of the Castle Chess premium quality chess boards :

Our Chess Boards are built to last for many years. Each Chess board is hand made  using basic woodworking tools and machinery - no mass production techniques are employed - and we use  only the finest hardwoods available which are imported from the USA and conform to their exacting international standards in terms of harvesting, air curing and kiln drying, ensuring enduring quality in a product that will last for generations to come. Since the boards are hand made and hand assembled, each board, though similar, is unique and variations will occur, particularly in terms of grain and colour.

Our Chess Boards are beautifully finished. No sealers, varnishes or other wood coatings are used, we hand rub natural oils into the wood, a lengthy and time consuming process which protects the wood and enhances its beauty. This is followed by the application of multiple coats of Bri-Wax, which is a mixture of Beeswax and Carnauba, which produces an exquisite finish, which, if properly cared for, will give years of service.  The raised playing surface floats on the frame to minimise the potentially detrimental effects of humidity and temperature change, and presents a unique and visually appealing appearance.

The playing surface  is made from American Walnut and Hard Maple. The frame is constructed from American Walnut, and has an attractive beaded finish around the top, with contrasting splines  inserted into each corner, which have the dual purpose of not only considerably strengthening the construction, but also offering an attractive feature to contrast the Walnut. We offer the option of Maple splines for a modern look or Walnut splines if a more more classical appearance is preferred. (See Gallery for comparison). These particular hard woods have been found to be the best in terms of retaining flatness - no warping or cracking - and they also have great bonding properties which means that your chess board will stay in its original condition for years to come - provided it is cared for properly!

These exquisite Chess Boards are designed and made to enhance your enjoyment of the game of chess, and to be admired as a fine feature on display in your home, along with your favourite chess set.
